i really dont know how to figure this out i would actually like help rather than just the answer so i can figure it out on my own
Raythia and her friend, Mary, are going to a community cookout. At the cookout community members can hae a meal using any combination of 9 sides and 4 different main dishes, as shown on the menu below.
Main Dishes----------------Sides
Burger--------------------------salad
hot dog---------------------cole slaw
chicken-------------------------beans
grilled veggies------------fruit salad
-----------------------------corn on the cob
----------------------------mac and cheese
------------------------------potato salad
--------------------------------biscui鈥?br>
-------------------------------waterme鈥?br>
Raythia wants a meal with 3 different sides with her grilled veggies. How many different combinations for Raythia's meal are possible?
Mary wants a meal with 2 different sides with any type of main dish. How many different meal combinations are possible for Mary?|||All based on multiplication principle and combinations:
Raythia wants a meal with 3 different sides with her grilled veggies. How many different combinations for Raythia's meal are possible?
count of {grilled veggies, side1, side2, side4} = 1鈥(9,3) = 9鈥?鈥?/3鈥?鈥? = 1鈥?鈥?鈥? = 84
Note: we use combinations because the order in which the items are chosen is irrelevant.
Mary wants a meal with 2 different sides with any type of main dish. How many different meal combinations are possible for Mary?
count of {any main, side1, side2} = C(4.1)鈥(9,2) = 4鈥?鈥?/2鈥? = 4鈥?鈥? = 144|||Combination formula: nCr = n! / r! (n-r)!
"n" is the total choices; the number of items.
"C" is the combination term
"r" is the items chosen.
Raythia has 1 main dish choice with 3 sides chosen.
The 1 is predetermined; so work out the sides.
9C3 = 9! / 3!(9-3)! ....becomes 9! / 3! (6)!...expand !
9鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?/3鈥?鈥?(6鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?鈥?)
now cancel out similiar values top and bottom
6,5,4,3,2,1 cancel top and bottom....
now solve what is left of the problem.
9鈥?鈥?/3鈥?鈥? = now you solve.
--------------------------------------
Mary is a nCr +nCr of 1 main with 2 sides.
Main dish: 4C1 + 9C2
[4! / 1!(4-1)!] + [9! / 2!(9-2)!]
there is the formula set up.
Here is a site to help you.
