My husband is hanging a cabinet in our 1/2 bath for extra storage. He just text me and said that it wont hang and he thinks that it is because of the water panel in the garage and that the home builders must have protected it with metal. I really cant find another spot that would be decent enough to hang the cabinet. Is there any way to still hang it in that spot?|||Glad you asked. If he is trying to hit a stud and he hits metal, it may be a nail plate that is intended to protect a water pipe or electrical cable from being punctured by a screw or nail. Tell him to carefully cut a hole in the drywall large enough to look in with a flashlight and determine what is behind the drywall and where. Tell him not to cut any deeper than 1/2 inch or so. He should be able to tell how far he can go into the metal, and if he chooses, he can drill a hole through the plate to accommodate his cabinet hang, as long as he doesn't go deep enough to hit the water or electrical lines. If he can't or doesn't want to make the cut, he can use a stud finder and a magnet to look around for a better place to hang the cabinet, or hire it out|||First off, you should mount cabinetry with screws not nails, so the 1st responder doesn't know much about the topic. Suggesting you use liquid nail other bonding adhesive is way to have a cabinet fall off the wall and hit someone in the head. Don't consider either method. The 2nd responder is correct in everything he's telling you. Before I would cut any holes, simply try raising or lowering the cabinet an inch or two. If it is just a nail plate (which most likely it is), you will miss it by simply raising or lowering the cabinet some. Know that the cabinet should not be any lower then 57" off the floor. It's a head knocker thing.|||try nailing higher or lower, usually the metal band protector is only 1-2 inches wide, if its a larger plate of metal try some Liquid nails, or high strength bonding adhesive,,,
